What is KNX?

KNX is an open, manufacturer-independent international standard (ISO/IEC 14543) for building and home electrical installations, governing lighting, blinds and shading, room-level climate control, and access at the room and zone level. It is the merged successor to earlier European bus standards and today is one of the most widely deployed field-bus protocols in residential and light-commercial buildings globally, particularly across Europe and Europe-influenced markets. Because KNX devices are wired and commissioned as a dedicated field bus rather than layered over a generic network, KNX projects tend to carry deep, room-by-room configuration detail that a unifying platform needs to respect rather than flatten.

Decentralized topology and every media type

KNX is architecturally decentralized: every device on the bus — a switch actuator, a dimmer, a blind controller, a room sensor — is an independently intelligent node with its own logic, rather than a dumb endpoint reporting to one central controller. That means a KNX installation keeps functioning locally even if the head-end system goes offline. xSERVA integrates KNX across all four standard media types: Twisted Pair (TP), the classic dedicated two-wire bus cable; Powerline (PL), which rides on existing electrical wiring; RF, for wireless KNX devices; and KNX IP, which tunnels or routes KNX telegrams over standard Ethernet. Many real installations mix two or more of these on the same site, and xSERVA reads and writes to all of them through one interface.

ETS project import and integration

Every professional KNX installation is designed and commissioned using ETS (Engineering Tool Software), the KNX Association's own configuration tool, which produces the definitive record of every device, group address, and topology on the bus. Rather than asking an integrator to re-map that structure by hand, xSERVA is built to work directly with ETS project data, carrying group addresses and device metadata straight into the platform's data model. That preserves the design intent already captured by the KNX integrator and avoids the duplicated, error-prone re-entry that historically made KNX-to-BMS integrations slow and expensive to commission.

KNX Secure, and where Certified Partner status stands

KNX Secure adds authenticated, encrypted telegrams to the bus, protecting both device configuration (KNX IP Secure) and runtime data (KNX Data Secure) against tampering and eavesdropping — increasingly relevant as KNX installations bridge onto IP networks and cloud-connected platforms rather than staying fully isolated. xSERVA supports KNX Secure fully, so projects that require authenticated, encrypted KNX traffic — corporate headquarters, government buildings, high-end residential — are covered without a workaround layered on top.

The xSERVA KNX integration is engineered against the KNX Association’s published specification — group addressing, datapoint types, and KNX Secure — rather than a best-effort reverse-engineering of the protocol.

Where KNX shows up in real buildings

KNX is the dominant choice for lighting, blind and shading control, and room-level climate automation in residential towers, villas, boutique hotels, and light-commercial fit-outs, especially in markets where KNX has long been the de facto electrical-installation standard. It is common on developer-led residential projects where every unit needs consistent scene control, and on light-commercial spaces where room-by-room automation matters more than a centralized plant. xSERVA connects to that existing KNX installation directly through its ETS project data, then folds every switch, dimmer, and blind actuator into the same dashboards, scheduling engine, and alarm queue used for every other protocol on site, so a KNX-controlled residential tower and a BACnet-controlled commercial podium can be run from one console.

Frequently asked questions

Does xSERVA support all four KNX media types?

Yes. xSERVA integrates KNX regardless of which physical medium a project uses — Twisted Pair, Powerline, RF, or KNX IP — and buildings frequently mix more than one on the same installation.

Can I import an existing ETS project directly into xSERVA?

Yes. xSERVA is built to work with ETS project data, so the group addresses, devices, and topology already configured by your KNX integrator carry straight through instead of being re-mapped by hand.

Is KNX Secure required, and does xSERVA support it?

KNX Secure is not mandated on every installation, but xSERVA supports it fully, so projects that require authenticated, encrypted KNX telegrams are covered without any workaround.

Is VYROX a certified KNX partner?

Not yet. KNX Association Certified Partner status is a certification VYROX is working toward, not one already on file. What is true today is that the xSERVA KNX integration is engineered against the KNX Association's published specification, including group addressing, datapoint types, and KNX Secure, rather than a reverse-engineered guess.
